International Workshop on the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS) Strengthens Sustainable Hydropower Development in Indonesia
JAKARTA, 4 February 2026 — In a significant move toward strengthening the nation’s renewable energy landscape, the Indonesia Network of Learning Centers for Environmental and Social Sustainability (NLC-ESS) and Equator Group, in collaboration with the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance (HSA), successfully hosted the International Workshop on the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS).
The event, held at Four Points by Sheraton Thamrin, Jakarta, served as a high-level strategic forum to align Indonesia’s hydropower growth with internationally recognized sustainability benchmarks.
Strategic Perspectives on Energy Transition
The workshop opened with a series of keynote addresses from key government figures, emphasizing the integration of sustainability into national policy.
Mr. Yusuf Suryanto (BAPPENAS) highlighted the strategic role of hydropower within Indonesia’s long-term development planning. He stressed that the adoption of sustainability principles is fundamental to ensuring environmental integrity, social responsibility, and economic viability—three pillars essential for the success of Indonesia’s energy transition.
Representing the regulatory side, Dr. Ir. Hendra Iswahyudi, M.Si. (Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources – ESDM) provided a comprehensive overview of government policies concerning renewable energy. He highlighted how standardized frameworks like the HSS are crucial for navigating the regulatory landscape and meeting national climate targets.
Bridging Global Standards with Local Implementation
The core of the workshop focused on the technical application of the HSS framework, led by esteemed international and local experts:
-
Ms. Amina Kadyrzhanova (HSA): Provided an in-depth look at the HSS framework and global best practices, facilitating interactive dialogues on how these standards are evolving globally.
-
Mr. Deny Ramadhani (HSS Accredited Assessor / INAHA): Offered practical insights and case studies specifically tailored to the Indonesian context, addressing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by local developers.
Commitment to National Ownership and Capacity
Rimun Wibowo, Chairman of NLC-ESS and President Director of Equator Group, emphasized the importance of consistent application: “Through this collaboration, we aim to strengthen the applied understanding of sustainability standards and support consistent implementation across all projects in Indonesia.”
Adding a global perspective, Amina Kadyrzhanova, Head of the Training Academy at HSA, noted that building local expertise is a key milestone. “Having locally based Accredited Assessors is a vital step for national ownership. We are proud to support Indonesia in its capacity to apply these standards independently and consistently,” she stated.
