International Workshop on the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS) Strengthens Sustainable Hydropower Development in Indonesia

Jakarta, 4 February 2026 — Indonesia #NLC-ESS, in collaboration with Equator Group, successfully organized the International Workshop on the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS) on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, at Four Points by Sheraton Thamrin, Jakarta. The workshop served as a strategic forum to strengthen understanding and implementation of sustainability standards in hydropower development in Indonesia.

The event featured distinguished national and international experts who shared strategic, policy, and technical perspectives on sustainable hydropower development.

In his keynote address, Mr. Yusuf Suryanto (BAPPENAS) highlighted the strategic role of hydropower in supporting Indonesia’s national development planning and energy transition, emphasizing the importance of integrating sustainability principles into long-term energy infrastructure development.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ir. Hendra Iswahyudi, M.Si. (Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources – ESDM) presented an overview of government policies on renewable energy development, including regulatory frameworks and sustainability standards relevant to the hydropower sector.

Discussions on global standards and technical implementation of the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS) were delivered by:

  • Ms. Amina Kadyrzhanova (Hydropower Sustainability Alliance – HSA), who provided a comprehensive overview of the HSS framework and global best practices, while also facilitating reflective discussions throughout the workshop.

  • Mr. Deny Ramadhani, an HSS Accredited Assessor and independent consultant (INAHA), who shared case studies and practical experiences on applying hydropower sustainability standards within the Indonesian context.

The workshop was attended by a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from government institutions and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), financial institutions, hydropower developers and operators such as PLN, INAHA, KHN, Poso Energy, Arkora Hydro, and Andritz Hydro, as well as environmental, social, and technical consulting firms including Afry, Nippon Koei, Smec Denka, Hatfield, Greencorp, Unisistem Utama, CEC, Laras Sembada, and KJP Tri Utama, along with independent professionals and technical specialists.

The successful implementation of this workshop was made possible by the strong commitment and coordination of the #NLC-ESS and Equator Group teams. It is expected that the knowledge shared and discussions generated will serve as a key foundation for advancing sustainable, responsible, and equitable hydropower development in Indonesia.
